Boston: Benjamin Harris at the London Coffee House, 1683. The first schoolbook printed in the British Colonies, it consists of rhyming couplet derived from the Old Testament and also includes the prayer “Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep.” The book goes through multiple printings and subsequently sells more than five million copies. The earliest surviving copy was printed in 1727.
